A course to prepare all staff across clinics for the network’s national TCLA Awareness Week, and to help them learn more about the cognitive deficits induced by alcohol use disorder.
The Ask: An increasing number of patients with addiction are affected by TCLA (troubles cognitifs liés à l’alcool), also known as cognitive impairment induced by alcohol use disorder. However, not all clinics have the staff or capacity to care for these patients appropriately.
This course was created to demystify TCLA, provide tips on identifying potential issues, introduce a diagnostic process (if the clinic does not have access to a neuropsychologist) and demonstrate small adjustments that can be made to improve care.
The course was released in line with an annual TCLA awareness week, during which clinic staff ran daily cognitive exercises to raise awareness of potential cognitive issues and the next steps to take if patients have any concerns.
The Audience: All care staff at clinics (doctors to nursing assistants).

The Results: 50% of staff completed the course within a week, with 75% of staff completing the course overall. The success of the course led to the development of a TCLA certificate within the network, broken down into multiple modules. It explores all facets of cognition, and the long term impact of TCLA on patients.
It also led to the development of TCLA ambassadors within clinics, the resident experts who will work with our national specialist on initiatives expanding access to tips and tools for patients impacted.
